CHIEF EXECUTIVE HONOURED

April 2010

SADDLERS' Chief Executive, Roy Whalley, recently received the Walsall Lifelong Learning Alliance's Chair's Awards for his role in helping promote and develop adult earning across the Borough.

Roy was presented with the award at the WLLA's 12th annual awards ceremony, which was held at the Banks's Stadium on Wednesday, 17th March 2010. The key remit of WLLA is to promote and develop adult earning across the Borough.

The Chair's Award recognises the support of an individual or organisation in achieving this aim, and to the work of WLLA in general. Through the WLLA's partnership with Walsall Football Club, the 'Walsall Bite Size' campaign has been a great success.

As well as sponsoring the Family Stand at the Banks's Stadium, the Walsall Bite Size campaign, which focuses on providing training and learning opportunities for everyone within Walsall, has been embraced and promoted by the football club using a variety of channels.

"In developing the Walsall Bite Size campaign Walsall Lifelong Learning Alliance has been fortunate to rely upon the unwavering support of Roy, Walsall Football Club's Chief Executive and Commercial Director, in utilising the club as a springboard to get across the Walsall Bite Size message," said Walsall Lifelong Learning Alliance Chair Dr. Bob Crundwell. "Nothing is ever too much trouble - from tickets and tours to developing new promotion opportunities for us and organising player appearances, our recipient lives and breathes Walsall.

"Roy believes fully in what we are all trying to achieve in providing training and learning opportunities for everyone within Walsall and to adults in particular. The Club itself has a robust and innovative Community Programme and an active Learning Centre working with our youngsters. To this end, and as recognition of the support given to WLLA, we were delighted to present Roy with The Chair's Award this year."

"I was delighted to receive the award on behalf of the football club," explained Roy. "It has been a real team effort and I would like to thank everybody - the Community Department, Saddlers Learning Centre, staff, players and the management team - for the active role we play in the local community."

WLLA Manager, Colin Robinson, added:

"The 12th Walsall Lifelong Learning Awards have once again been an outstanding success. Austin Healey proved to be a wonderful presenter and it was great that the evening culminated with this truly well deserved award to Roy and everybody at WFC, who continue to be a staunch supporter of the work WLLA does, specifically in relation to the Walsall Bite Size campaign."

PREMIER LEAGUE GIANTS TAKE A LEAF OUT OF THE SADDLERS' BOOK

July 2009

At a recent Stadium Experience meeting, which was held here at the Banks's Stadium, Walsall FC Sales Manager, Dianne Elsworth talked to the UK's stadium managers about the programme of events that we offer, including cabaret nights, sporting dinners, seminars and conferences and the benefits that this has had on the business.

Following this meeting, Everton FC's catering partner, Sodexo, followed suit and organised a number of events, including away game screenings, a Father's Day dinner and psychic nights.

Head of Non-Matchday Sales for the Premier League club, Tony Watson, commented: "It was clear to see that both Dianne at Walsall and Donna Talbot at Ipswich Town were making good commercial revenues from large scale public events on a non-matchday.

"Since implementing our plans, we have seen just under 5,000 new customers come through the doors in six months and this has had a very good impact on our bottom line at a challenging time for the conference industry."

MOTHERS' UNION ENJOY BANKS'S STADIUM VISIT

September 2007

Treasurers and Administrators from Mothers’ Union branches across Britain and Ireland descended upon the Banks’s Stadium for a national conference. And they were joined by the Anglican mission agency’s International President Rosemary Kempsell who used the opportunity to unveil a new branding to re-launch the agency.

In her role as International President, Rosemary Kempsell has visited Mothers’ Union branches in Burma and the Phillipines, South Africa, Mozambique, Zambia, Botswana and Uganda; but said she felt no hesitation at visiting the less exotic home of Walsall Football Club. She said: “Every where I go is different, but the one thing they all have in common is football. Wherever I go, even to small African villages, I see youngsters playing football in the street - in some cases with home made footballs.”

Walsall Football Club’s Conference & Banqueting Sales Executive, Dianne Elsworth, commented: "We are delighted to welcome the Mothers' Union to the Banks's Stadium. They do a great mount of good work and we are pleased that they have chosen the facilities here at the Banks's Stadium for their national conference."

BOSTIN' BLACK COUNTRY WEDDING MENU NOW AVAILABLE

August 2007

The Conference & Banqueting Department are celebrating their Black Country Heritage with the introduction of a new wedding menu packed with traditional local delicacies.

The Black Country Wedding Menu, which is available to all couples using the Banks’s Stadium as a wedding venue, features dishes synonymous with the area such as faggots and peas, steak and Banks’s ale pie and chicken balti.

The menu is the brain-child of Head Chef, Richard Varley, who came up with the concept after seeing the kind of food served at the weddings of high-profile footballers over the summer.

Varley took inspiration from the menus available at the weddings of England stars John Terry, Gary Neville and Michael Carrick and added a Walsall flavour to come up with his new concept.

“The kind of food being served at these weddings was typically English,” he explained. “Fish and chips featured heavily on the menu’s and I thought it would be good to offer an alternative menu here.

“The Black Country is famous for a number of dishes and we’ve combined them all in our new Black Country Wedding Menu.

“Obviously, other menus are available as we cater for a variety of weddings here at the Banks’s Stadium.

“We are a multi-cultural venue and the Black Country Wedding Menu is another option to couples, which we are sure will prove popular.”

WALSALL FOOTBALL CLUB AWARDED

August 2007

It wasn’t just on the field that Walsall Football Club excelled during 2006/07, the club also picked up a number of awards at the recent Official Football Hospitality Awards.

The awards, which were held on Thursday 24th May at St James’ Park, recognised excellence off the field and The Saddlers were nominated in three separate categories, picking up the Bronze Award for Matchday Hospitality Excellence.

Catering teams from the Barclays Premiership through to Coca-Cola League Two attended the awards, which were presented by Newcastle United legend Peter Beardsley.

The Saddlers’ first nomination was in the category of Conference & Events Marketing. This award was judged by an independent conference professional, marking quality of website, marketing literature contents and mystery shopper style telephone call.

Walsall Football Club was also nominated in the prestigious Directors Choice for Coca-Cola League 2 Nomination, which is voted for by the Board of Directors at each League Two Club during an away match visit.

After two nominations, Walsall Football Club picked up their first award when they received ‘Bronze’ in the Matchday Hospitality Experience Category.
